Theodore Vass
      Projects
      Objects
      About

              About

As an artist and furniture maker, my practice interconnects sculpture, design, and spatial thinking.
Exploring how objects define, frame, and respond to the environments they occupy. Each work begins as
an inquiry into structure: how a line, a bend, or a composition can be expressed through material,
and how such gestures can both divide and connect space.

Working primarily in wood, I use traditional processes such as steam-bending to explore the balance
between precision and intuition. The resulting pieces are both functional and reflective, furniture
that fulfils its purpose yet carries the presence of sculpture.

I understand furniture as a form of soft architecture — a way to reconfigure space through presence
rather than reconstruction. Each piece acts as a participant in the life of a room, shaping how space
feels and behaves. It offers a way to inhabit architecture differently; to invest in it, reimagine it,
                and make it one’s own.

My work is guided by proportion, material economy, and a respect for process. Each commission is made
to endure, to adapt, and to gather meaning through use — objects conceived not as statements, but as
continuations of the spaces and lives they belong to.

Fitted wardrobe with jute panels, designed and made in South East London.

A fitted wardrobe designed to maximise storage in a compact bedroom while maintaining a calm, material-led
atmosphere. The client wanted a composition that felt like an extension of the wall rather than furniture
                placed against it.

            <img width="1400" height="2100" width_o="1400" height_o="2100" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/f2b6fa58fd1de83f4f96590b5e7dc761bdff3b62dd35bde97e0fe7e09362e181/TV_P.jpg" data-mid="1423576" border="0" data-scale="60"/>

Made from locally sourced London Plane with inset jute fabric panels, the piece combines natural materials
for both visual warmth and acoustic softness. The steam-bent and laminated door frames sit flush with the wall,
their gentle curvature softening the room’s geometry. The contrast between the timber and fabric will deepen
over time, creating a subtle dialogue between surface and tone.

The project also introduced an adaptable idea — producing bespoke doors that can retrofit existing wardrobes,
allowing clients to refresh spaces with craft-led detail without a full rebuild.

A commission for a compact flat with challenging proportions and subtle subsidence, the brief was to make the space
feel intentional and open without resorting to conventional fitted joinery. The design needed to engage with the room’s
                imperfections rather than conceal them.

Formed in locally sourced London Plane and steel, the furniture reads as a single gesture falling from ceiling to floor.
A long U-shaped bend descends to meet the wall, referencing architectural features while remaining distinctly furniture.
The contrast between the warm timber and the reflective metal introduces lightness and rhythm, grounding the room through
                materiality and composition.

Cabinetry and shelving for a dining room, designed and made in South East London.

The clients admired an earlier limited-edition cabinet design and wanted something with a similar language,
adapted for their home and made from locally sourced timber. The brief was to create a statement piece that
would anchor the dining room while working with its new green walls.

            <img width="2100" height="1400" width_o="2100" height_o="1400" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/ae6f252bcb2fa1a64e8e175897eac718f032ee26844d0bb2bbdb803d4640220e/TV_TH.jpg" data-mid="1423188" border="0" data-scale="90"/>

Constructed from London Plane felled in nearby Denmark Hill, the piece combines painted panels by Eliza
Hopewell with sweeping steam-bent elements. Each curve was formed from 5 mm-thick strips of London Plane,
winched around a former and joined with sliding dovetails so the structure can be dry-fitted, dismantled
or extended in future. The result is both artwork and joinery: paintings that move and intersect, bends
that reveal a gradient of tone, and spaces for display that bring the room to life.

Designed for a former carpenter’s workshop, this project aimed to connect a disjointed corner of a bedroom
to the rest of the space. The brief was to create a workspace that felt calm and connected, using materials
that reflected the building’s industrial past.

A continuous walnut worktop wraps the wall, forming both desk and storage, while stainless steel shelving
introduces a reflective counterpoint that catches the light from the nearby window. Reclaimed veneer from
a previous refurbishment was reused for the worktop, adding texture and memory to the surface. The
combination of warm and cool materials gives the piece balance — a quiet nod to the building’s history and
a clear expression of contemporary craft.

              Brockley, London — 2024
Entrance storage and first-floor bookshelf for a private family home, designed and made in South East London.

A dual commission for a family home: a robust entrance rack for shoes and coats, and a sculptural
bookshelf for the upper floor. The design needed to feel cohesive while responding to two very
different conditions — the bustle of a hallway and the calm of a bedroom.

            <img width="1400" height="2100" width_o="1400" height_o="2100" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/2240aab55ede0a9bd6732cc35e144987f327f87100a479dfe6b455cc59ea1765/TV_B3.jpg" data-mid="1423567" border="0" data-scale="60"/>

The entrance pieces are made from UK-grown Sweet Chestnut, chosen for its strength, warmth and
lighter tone. Parallel wavy lines form the top and bottom edges, creating wells for everyday items
                and softening the overall geometry.

Upstairs, a bookshelf in London Plane timber acts as a vertical totem. Carved uprights and subtle
shelf intersections lend a drawn, gestural quality. Both elements balance function and rhythm —
grounded and durable downstairs, lighter and more reflective above.

This was the first iteration of a modular wall-mounted shelving system designed to assemble easily and adapt
to different homes. The brief was to integrate a television within a tight space under a mezzanine, while
keeping the piece light and minimal.

Made from sapele and ash, the shelving establishes a strong horizontal rhythm that softens the surrounding
architecture through gentle curves. The design evolved from an interest in accessibility — how bespoke
furniture can be made to move with its owners rather than stay fixed in one place. The result is a compact,
affordable system that sits comfortably in modern interiors while maintaining the clarity and precision of
                custom joinery.

Designed to replace existing cabinets in a lower-ground dining room, this installation brings rhythm
and warmth to a space defined by its chimney breast. The brief asked for structure and play — a
composition that could enliven the room while remaining practical and balanced.

Each side of the alcove is balanced through careful spacing rather than symmetry, joined by a run of
shelves that reads as one continuous sequence. The curved elements combine steam-bent and laminated
sapele, their movement setting the tone for the piece. Ash-fronted shelving provides a lighter
counterpoint and enhances the sense of depth. The result is a cohesive gesture across the wall —
                expressive whilst retaining order and function.&nbsp;
