How to Commission Bespoke Furniture
Commissioning with me is straightforward and collaborative. Each project is different, but the stages below outline how we’ll move from first contact to a finished piece.
At every stage, I keep things clear — what I’ll do, what I need from you, and the decisions that matter.
1. First contact
Send:
– 2–4 photos of your space (wide and detail shots)
– Rough dimensions
– What drew you to my work or which piece you like
– A ballpark budget and any material preferences
This helps me quickly assess feasibility and propose the right next step.
2. Quick assessment
I’ll reply with:
– A short feasibility note
– Suggested next step (site visit, remote measure, or adapted piece)
– An outline of design fee and costs
You’ll know where we stand before any commitment.
3. Site visit / measure
When needed, I’ll visit to measure, photograph and observe how the space behaves — light, proportion and use.
If a visit isn’t necessary, we can work from photos and a video call. This stage defines the brief and informs the design direction.
4. Design proposal
I produce sketches and a concise concept note covering materials, proportion and approach.
You’ll receive a sketch-level estimate inclusive of a design fee to move forward. We refine the direction until the essentials feel right.
5. Feedback & refinement
One or two rounds of feedback are used to clarify details and adjust proportions.
Once the design is agreed, I produce a final pack and a detailed fixed quote including lead time and installation.
6. Quote & deposit
You’ll receive:
– A clear cost breakdown (materials, labour, finishes, installation)
– A contract confirming scope and timeline
– A deposit request to secure the build slot
This locks in the project and sets expectations.
7. Production
I make the piece in my workshop, sharing progress images for larger projects.
Lead times vary by scale and material availability — these are confirmed in the quote. Any changes are always discussed first.
8. Delivery & installation
I can install the piece myself, or supply a simple flat-pack version for self-installation.
Everything is fitted, adjusted and finished before I leave the space.
9. Aftercare
You’ll receive care notes for the timber and finish, along with advice for future refinishing or repair.
Practical notes
– Adapted versions of previous designs are quicker and more affordable
– Clear budgets early on help shape material and process decisions
– Local or reclaimed timber can be sourced on request
– Transport and installation are always included in formal quotes
Ready to start a commission?
Send a few images of your space, your brief and an idea of budget. I’ll respond with the best next step — whether that’s a site visit, sketch, or adapted piece.
